The Katy Perry Effect

If you have been on the Internet or turned on a TV in the past few days, you have heard about Katy Perry and Elmo's play date on Sesame Street.  And you have heard about the controversy regarding her ample bosom.

It's cute.  It's cheeky.
It's over the top.
It's exactly what you would expect from Katy.

My love of both Katy Perry and Sesame Street is known, I've blogged about them both before. I've liked her ever since she "kissed a girl" and Goose watches Elmo every morning.  So, my stance on this may be surprising to you.  I think it is  completely inappropriate.
And here is why...

I'm a pretty laid back mom.  I let Goose watch The Simpsons.  We sing Lady Gaga together in the car.  I watch trashy TV around her.  I *try* my hardest not to swear.  I wear reveling clothing from time to time. Goose has seen me in my underwear (and, gasp, nekkid).  She is not a sheltered child by any means.

If this were on Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel, I don't think I would have even batted an eyelash.
But it wasn't.
It was on PBS.
It was on Sesame Street.

As a parent, I feel its my right to pick and choose what my daughter is exposed to and when.  When I turn on certain channels, I know what to expect.  I know the tone of the show and the behavior and language she will see.  And when I turn on PBS, I expect a certain level of programming.
I admit, I hold them to a higher standard.

Sesame Street has been on the air for over 40 years and boasts an impressive list of celebrity guest stars over the years.  They have featured musicians, actors, athletes and political figures alike.  Some of them  have controversial personal lives, but their segments for the show have always been appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers who are unaware of the media persona of each person.  In all actuality, many kids probably don't even know who the adult guest stars are.

Here Sesame Street made a conscious decision to cover Perry's chest.  With a sheer flesh colored panel.  My husband thinks I am over reacting.  He says, and I don't disagree, that its not any worse than a figure skating costume.  That our daughter would look at her and think that she is nothing more than a pretty girl in a pretty yellow dress.  This is all true.  But there isn't any reason they couldn't have chosen a more conservative outfit.

There is a time and a place for everything and the place for cleavage bearing tops is NOT Sesame Street.

I hope that Sesame Street invites Perry back to film another segment.  She is charming and funny and her chemistry with Elmo is adorable.  A higher neckline would in no way diminish her sexy appeal.  It's who she is, you can't hide it.  Especially given the subject matter of the piece and Perry's penchant for creative attire.

In the future, I hope that PBS and Sesame Street is more aware of the decisions they are making.  I hope they know what parents have come to expect from them.  Because I know, to me, I turn to PBS knowing the programming will be entertaining, educational and age appropriate.

Rock Star

As early as I can remember, I wanted to be a rock star.
Not just a rock star. I wanted to be Jem.
The pink hair, the magic star earrings, the wild make up.
I wanted to be just like her.

But really, I just wanted attention.
I couldn't sing. I couldn't dance.
But I loved to talk.
Ham it up.
Always the boss.
The center of attention.

For several years, I was Jem for Halloween.
I remember in Kindergarten, my teacher let me MC for the "Christmas" concert.
I was always in choir.

But as I got older, the tomboy side of me won out.
I played sports and excelled at fastpitch, playing from 7 until 18.
I always wanted to be in plays, drama, but never had the time.
So choir was it.

I loved to sing. I still love to sing.
I don't care anymore if I am any good at it.
Goose likes it when I sing.

Some of my best memories from school come from choir.
Girls choir. Symphonic Choir (mixed). And Jazz Choir.
Jazz Choir was a 0 hour class, audition only.
I was proud to be a part of "JC."

And finally, a break in my fastpitch schedule Senior year.
I signed up for my first (and only) play.
"Good News."
I even had a speaking part.
It was a musical and I still can't dance.
But it was the most fun I ever had.

I'm still a show off.
I still like to be the center of attention.
And, I think, that is why I blog.

For the attention.

To have a captive audience to listen to my crazy so my husband doesn't have to.
And to show off a bit.
I would never do it in person.
But on MY blog I can just yell

LOOK AT ME!
LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!!
LOOK!
LOOK!
LOOK!
LOOK AT ME!!!

I think I still want to be a rock star when I grow up.

Yup.

I also wanted to be the president.
Again for the attention.
And
Cuz I would then be the boss of everyone!

Working Mom Wednesday!!!

Bumbershoot - Day 3 - Macklemore

Photobucket

Day 3 was all about Macklemore. He is a local artist, born and raised in Seattle. Hit it "big" through Myspace (I think) a few years ago. We try and see him every chance we get. He plays some of the bars in Oly every once an a while.

I've got to say, out of all three days, Macklemore's show was my favorite. Maybe it was because we came really wanting to see HIS show, maybe it was because we got there an hour early and were front and center (awesome!) or maybe it was just his incredible energy and the energy of all his guests!

Okay, enough talking... time for pics!

Bumbershoot - Day 2

Photobucket

I guess I didn't take many pics on Sunday. We saw a comedy show (no cameras allowed) and some shows at night. And without a flash on my camera right now - its pretty much useless at night.

We saw Aziz Ansari (the Indian guy from Parks and Recreation.) We were trying to see Nick Swardson (Terry, Reno 911-RIP), our favorite comic, but he was a last minute cancellation and Ansari filled in. He was surprisingly SUPER funny dude and a great surprise to see!

AND Doug Benson and Sarah Silverman opened for him, and they weren't even billed! That was an awesome surprise!

And here we are...
back at the motel getting cozy. We spent quite a bit of time in the room... enjoying each other... wonderful!

"Emo" re-entry stamps for Day 1 - Hubs was thrilled.

Our sleezy, cheap, shoebox size motel... that just happened to be a 10-ish minute walk from Bumbershoot and had free covered parking.

Got coffee here every morning. Despite being a NW native I am VERY anti-Starbucks. I prefer coffee from ANYWHERE else!
Photobucket

Not sure what kind of shop this is... but it was right by our hotel and I thought it was kinda funny. Rubber chickens, WTF?!?! I think it may have been some sort of Asian resturaunt?

KATY PERRY!! LUVS!!

Hubs enjoyed Katy Perry... very much. LMAO!

Hoofing it back and forth to the motel between shows to relax... and get drinks...

Labor Day Weekend

Photobucket

Hubs and I went to Bumbershoot, a music festival in Seattle this weekend. It was the first time we have taken a vacation together, just the two of us, since Goose was born. Sure, we have had date nights and she has spent the night at the Grandparents... but WE have never taken a vacation!

We didn't even get a honeymoon since I was 5 months pregnant at the time of our wedding. And since this coming up 11th is our 10 year annaversairy (of dating), we thought we would go all out and really treat ourselves. So, we booked a hotel and snagged our three day passes and saw some incredible art!

I needed this weekend. WE needed this weekend. I feel zen - music and art refules my soul and feeds my need to create!

Anyway, I took a TON of freaking pics and will be posting them shortly. Still need to pick and chose and upload and edit. I'll probably post them by day, seems to be the easiest way, at least I think...

LUVS and HUGS and I will be back shortly with LOTS of pictures to post!

Photobucket

PS - Can anyone tell me who started the trend of wearing leggings and shirts? Whatever happened to pants? Or heaven forbid a skirt. perhaps? If anyone knows, please tell me. I am completely baffeled at the amount of fat asses I saw squeezed into leggings w/ no pants. Gross! I seriously wonder what some of the women were thinking when they got dressed. Um, you know its Seattle? It's cold and rainy? Yeah... that fancy dress and heels ain't gonna look so hot when you look like a half-drowned cat. Just my two cents.

Musicality

If you like underground, socially aware, lyrically and creatively written, insightful hip-hop. Or ya know, even hip-hop at all, you will love this album. Hubs is a HUGE hip-hop-head, so he introduces me to all kinds of obscure music.

I reccommend you listen to the following songs:
People Like Me
Bang Bang w/ Adam Levine (this is my FAVORITE!)
Fatima

It's some really amazing music. I hope you like it as much as I do!
